Raised beds offer a lot of bang for the buck!

They are such a great way to maximize space while also offering ease of maintenance.  If you have a backyard but only want to utilize a small portion, then raised beds are going to be the best option for you.

Some of the benefits of raised bed gardening are:

  • Less weeds

  • Better water retention in areas that have super-sandy soil

  • Better drainage in areas with clay soils

  • More growing space

  • No soil compaction from human feet

  • Warmer soil earlier in the season

  • Warmer soil for a longer season

  • Soil that has basically a neutral pH unless you add something to change it (because you’re filling it)

  • Less soil erosion (especially, if the bed is framed)

The ease of maintenance is biggest perk for me!  If you have mobility issues, then raised beds may be a great option since they can be customizable to suit your needs.  You can have them as low as 12 inches or as high as 24 inches like mine.  It's about how much bending and kneeling you are able and/or willing to do.

Fill your raised bed using the Hugelkultur process.
